Discovering our food: watermelon 🍉

Hello my dear readers,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Unfortunately is always too short but hey, someone need to carry on the stuffs in this world, right?

This week I would like to share with you one of my favourite summer fruits: watermelon.

Cool, rich in water, vitamins and lycopene, watermelon is the most loved food of the summer.

According to a legend, because of its ball shape, it was one of the first playing instruments of the gods. Can you imagine this gods using the watermelon as a ball?

Originally from tropical Africa, watermelon is mentioned in the hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt from five thousand years ago. According to the Egyptian religion, the watermelon, born from the seed of the god Seth, divinity of the desert and the dead, was often laid in the tombs of the pharaohs as a form of support for the afterlife. The nobles offered it to visiting guests to restore them from fatigue and thirst.

Watermelon (Citrullus Vulgaris) belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, such as cucumbers, courgettes, melons and pumpkins. Each plant can produce 100 fruits, generally oval and large, and can reach even 20 kg.

Worldwide, watermelon cultivation affects about 1,500,000 hectares and is particularly widespread in Russia, Turkey, Brazil and in the United States.

There are 50 varieties of watermelon, of different appearance: round, oval, baby, with bright green striped or spotted skin, with white or yellow spots.

And also the watermelon loves the warm climates, just like me 😎🤩

The watermelon, like the melon, is native from warm climates, the seed is born above 24 degrees Celsius and then grows well in temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, for this is a typical summer fruit and if the climate is a bit stiff you need to cover it with black sheets to warm the plants better. A temperature below 14 degrees Celsius can stop its growth affecting the harvest.

The soil to cultivate the watermelon must be rich and not arid, tendentially acidic (ph above 5.5). It is a cultivation that requires water and nutrients. Like many plants, the watermelon also fears the stagnation of water that causes root rot, for which the soil is prepared with deep digging and enriched by fertilising with manure, compost or pollen, the watermelon loves a rich fertilisation. If you want the watermelon to be sweet, need to make sure there is a good presence of potassium in the soil if it is not enriched with fertiliser or you can also use ashes if you have.

If you are sowing the watermelon in a pot, then you can start doing it in spring, around March, but make sure you keep it in a protected place. Otherwise, especially if sown in the open field, it is best done between April and May to avoid the risk of low temperatures or late frosts. Even the transplantation in the garden should not be done before April.

It is essential to guarantee water to the watermelons, frequent irrigation is needed during germination and transplantation, with the growth of the plant an increasing quantity of water is needed because the roots do not go particularly deep. Don’t irrigate it before the harvest otherwise the fruit will be too watery.

For a small domestic vegetable garden the best is to use the Sugar Baby variety, which is a very sweet small watermelon that generally does not exceed 5 kg.

Rich in water, vitamins and potassium, watermelon stimulates diuresis and is very appreciated by those who follow a low-calorie diet or are looking for foods to help control hunger.

So why not take advantage of its nutritional qualities and use it as an ingredient in the kitchen?

A few of the best recipes with watermelon: delicious appetisers, vegetarian first courses, light second courses and mouth-watering cold desserts that will certainly make your mouth water. And what if I tell you that you can create an entire menu based on this refreshing fruit: from skewers with watermelon to cold rice with watermelon, from turkey cut with watermelon to watermelon granita.

Watermelon contains good amount of carotenoids (Vitamin A), water and mineral salts. According to nutritionists and the latest scientific research, watermelon is the fruit of summer with an inexhaustible source of well-being.

Lycopene, present in the pulp, which gives its typical red color, hasantioxidant powers, important in particular for the prevention of prostate and breast cancers. The watermelon pulp is composed of 92% water and 8% sugars. For this reason its consumption is indicated in the summer diet, as it helps fight dehydration during the hottest days, basically allowing us to drink while eating. In summer, eating watermelon protects the skin from the risks associated with excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Moreover, it is a natural ally for thereduction of bad cholesterol and allows to keep the weight under control, being fat-free and low in sugar. Even those who are careful to the silhouette, can eat watermelon without worrying, taking advantage of the benefits of this water-rich fruit that stimulates diuresis and eliminate the toxins. You don’t believe me? Just think that 100 grams of watermelon contain only 30 calories. That’s not all, citrulline, a substance found in the white part, makes this fruit suitable for preventing hypertension and heart disease, as well as being known for its aphrodisiac properties.

Watermelon consumption can also help improve sleep quality. Eating a couple of slices after dinner, in fact, stimulates the production of serotonin in the body, due to its carbohydrate content, favoring peaceful sleep. In the summer, you know, the heat can drain your energy. Eating a nice and fresh slice of watermelon can help us “recharge the batteries”. This happens because of its vitamin B6 content, which the body uses to synthesize dopamine, a promoter of wellness. Watermelon also contains magnesium, which is used by our body to supply cells with energy.

Of course, not all of us has the possibility to grown its own watermelon but usually in summer is very easy to find it to buy. But how to understand if we are choosing a good watermelon or not?

First, the stalk of the watermelon must not be dry. The point where there is the petiole, or where it was before being harvested, must be moist, with the juice coming out. This way you can enjoy a ripe and sugary fruit. A further trick consists in the classic test of the “empty sound” that is obtained by knocking lightly with a finger on the surface of the fruit. The noise must be dull. If this is not enough, look for watermelons with streaks and yellow spots. Finally, you can choose to buy watermelon from a trusted grocery store who will advise you or, better yet, let you taste a piece of watermelon before buying.

Now that you know the many positive sides that make watermelon the fruit of summer, how would you like to enjoy it? A savoury dish or simply a big nice fresh slice of it?

Here in Singapore is very common the yellow watermelon and I simply love it! Is on our table every week for breakfast 😉

Thank you for reading and for joining me in this discovering journey!

Join me next time and let’s discover province of Gānsù in China, which is in the first place for the production of watermelon, producing annually 79.2 Million Tons.

And last but not least, remember that no one knows better than you what you want in life! So trust your heart and follow your dreams! Believe in yourself! Nothing is impossible!

Have a great week!

Bye bye for now 🙂

We Have Just Arrested 113 Cyber Crime Suspects In Benin – EFCC Makes Shocking Revelation

The Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it arrested no fewer than 113 internet fraud suspects in eight months through its ‘Operation Re-wire’.

Mr Mukhtar Bello, Head of Operations, EFCC in the zone, said this on Monday during a news conference in Benin.

Bello said the arrest took place between January and August in its area of jurisdiction, including Edo, Delta and Ondo states.

According to him, the feat was made possible because of the anti-graft commission’s new strategic plans to tackle the menace of cyber crimes in the zone.

He said that the commission secured 53 convictions during the period under review, while other cases were still pending in different courts.

He said that several exotic cars, laptops, mobile phones, flash drives, internet modems and charms were recovered from the suspects.

Bello said the commission, in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), would soon bust cyber crime kingpins and personalities in the zone, using the new operation wire.

He gave assurance that the operation would ensure that businesses and properties established and connected to suspected cyber criminals would be confiscated.

“Very soon you will see us closing up car dealerships and raiding hotels, but all these are end result of Business E-mail Compromise (BEC),”

He said.

He said that the collaboration with the FBI had led to the arrest of a female suspected cyber fraudster, who allegedly worked in collaboration with foreign counterparts in a darkweb.

Bello said the suspect specialised in obtaining and stealing people’s identification information, which she usually forwarded to her American collaborator.

“Her collaborator uses it to file for fraudulent tax return with the Internal Revenue Service, and she receives her cut through Bitcoin.

“About 185 Bitcoin, which by current market value is over N656 million, has been traced to her,”

Bello said.

He also said that the commission had arrested a cyber criminal and two siblings involved in BEC.

He said that the modus operandi of the three suspects was to always search for victim’s official email addresses in the web.

He said that the suspects would soon be arraigned, adding that the commission remained resolute in eliminating cyber crimes in the zone.

Calling Trump

No remnant of credibility that he might have had
at the start of his dark odyssey clings to this foolish cad.
Claiming to solve problems that his actions just exacerbate,
mere echoes of his words still chide enough that they infuriate.

Of the seven deadly sins, he’s had a taste of all.
When, if they are so deadly, will they bring about his fall?
Lust and gluttony? For sure. Greed? No doubt about it.
Sloth and wrath, envy and pride? What sane man would doubt it?

He’s left his presidential desk, preferring his own throne.
He borrows other people’s deeds to claim them as his own.
He manufactures science, quoting no valid source.

If it’s lacking in his hand, he’ll just invent the card!

4 Pieces Of Career Advice For College Graduates Looking For Work

You did it! You managed to survive the long nights cramming and countless research papers.

Now comes the most rewarding part of your undergraduate education: graduating.

It’s normal to get lost in the chaos of purchasing your cap and gown, wrapping up final projects, and saying goodbye to friends on campus. However, you shouldn’t let these things distract you from being ready for reality after you cross that stage.

Hopefully you’ve spent your years wisely building up your network, interning or securing an internship, and putting your studies to good use on the job. Here’s how to absolutely crush the competition after graduation.

Leverage Your Internship Experience

Believe it or not, your career can start from something as simple as an internship. Never take an opportunity like that for granted! You never know if you’ll meet your future boss or wiggle your way into a large company through an internship.

If you’ve managed to rack up your fair share of internships, make sure you display them prominently. Treat them as valuable work experience. Be prepared to share your internship experiences and how they’ve played a role in your professional growth.

Internships are a BIG deal, so don’t make the mistake of leaving them off your resume.

Tip: Volunteer experience counts, too! Add volunteer experience to your resume that speaks to your skill set. It makes you that much more competitive.

Put Yourself Out There

Don’t let your degree collect dust. Put your talent and brand out there through networking. Lend your skills to organizations that can’t afford to hire. Moonlight. Start a hobby hustle. Take more classes. Don’t let your education end at the stage.

Take time after graduating to learn everything there is to know about your industry (learn it ALL). Network, share what you’ve learned, and work to become an expert. The more you practice incorporating your skills into your everyday life, the more confident you’ll be during your interviews because you’ll be able to demonstrate your activeexperience.

Active experience is experience you’re gaining in real-time, meaning you’re building or honing skills daily.

Things to remember: You will not land your dream job right out of college. Even if you graduate with a job in hand, this job still may not meet your expectations. While you search for a job, don’t set your expectations too low, but don’t set unrealistic expectations that could cripple your job search and leave you devastated, shocked, and more likely to settle for anything.

Work On Your Resume DAILY

Times change, industries change, and people change. This means your resume will change.

A great way to excel in your job search is to build a relationship with your resumeand cover letter. The more you look at it, the more you’ll be able to quantify your experience, communicate your value to prospective companies, and understand where you’ve been.

The more you work on your resume, the better you’ll understand where you want to go in your career.

Tip: Craft job-specific cover letters for each job and create multiple resumes per industry. You don’t want to send a resume or cover letter geared towards marketing to an employer specializing in finance. Cut those rejection emails in half by making sure your resume and cover letter are personalized and unique.

Be Bold

The hiring process isn’t always cookie cutter, but when it is, you may feel there’s nothing you can do to stand out.

Be bold and put together takeaways for your interview. A takeaway could be a video showing what you’d do to improve a company’s processes. It could also be a sample communications plan. A takeaway essentially involves you taking an idea you have to make the company better or jump-start a project you’d be working on if hired and bringing it to life for the employer in your interview.

Takeaways can be expensive depending on what kind you need and how many interviews you have, so limit takeaways to companies you’re really passionate about. This will not only impress the hiring manager, but it will also help you make an impression that’s hard to forget.

It can be intimidating for recent college graduates to enter the workforce after graduation. You could even be getting shut out of the hiring process, and not even know it! Here’s why, and how you can turn things around FAST.

However, life after graduation can be wonderful if you plan ahead and work it daily! If you follow these pieces of career advice, you’ll be one step closer to landing a job you love.

NYSC Hands Over 50 Graduates With Fake Certificates To The Police

Fifty fake graduates will face prosecution after they were handed over to the police by NYSC.

The National Youth Service Corps has disclosed that it has nabbed 50 unqualified graduates who attempted to register in the Batch B Stream II exercise with fake certificates at the orientation camps across the country, a report by Punch has revealed.

The NYSC confirmed on Friday that the fake graduates, from various tertiary institutions, had been handed over to the police for prosecution.

The NYSC said the verification of the credentials of all corps members was on in the 37 orientation camps across the country, warning that unqualified graduates would not just be fished out but duly prosecuted.

The PUNCH had reported exclusively on Monday that no fewer than 25 prospective NYSC members were apprehended by the scheme.

However, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, confirmed on Friday that over 50 fake graduates had now been arrested across the orientation camps and handed over to the police.

Adeyemi, in a statement, noted that the NYSC Director-General, Brig Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, warned that those not qualified would no longer pass through the scheme.

She said:-

“The NYSC is committed to stemming the tide of fraudulent mobilisation of unqualified home-based and foreign-trained Nigerians, especially those purported to have graduated from unaccredited universities in the West African sub-region.

“The verification of credentials of all corps members currently in the 37 orientation camps across the country is still ongoing. As of date, over 50 unqualified graduates from different institutions of higher learning have been decamped from the 2019 Batch B Stream II NYSC Orientation Camps and handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution

Also in Taraba State, the NYSC caught six fake corps members; three of the suspects were identified as Nasiru Yau, Shehu Mukhtar and Illiyasu Usman. They all claimed to have finished from the Isfop University of Cotonou in the Republic of Benin.

Cuba condemns US cyber attacks against it

Minister Miguel Rodriguez at the UN | Photo credit: Prensa Latina

By BO Staff Writer

At a United Nations General Assembly meeting held yesterday, Miguel Rodriguez, Cuba’s Minister of Communications, condemned the actions by the US to intensify the anti Cuba media campaign.

Rodriguez further cautioned that the aggressive US blockade, cyber attacks and media campaigns against Cuba are out of kilter with the principles of the UN protocols and international law.

The Minister complained that the US is engaging in “unilateral measures” to prevent Cuba access to communication technology through the imposition of an economic, financial and commercial blockade on the island nation. He pointed out that in one year alone (2019), the US generated 865 hours on a weekly basis of anti-Cuba propaganda via 21 of its radio and television channels.

For about 20 years, the US has launched attacks on a number of “enemy countries” to overthrow them. Its list of enemies comprise of China, Russia, Venezuela, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, Cuba, Nicaragua and Bolivia. Economic, military, and political criteria are taken into account by imperialist strategists in the determination of which country features on the said list.

The US regards Cuba as an adversary on its list of enemies because it has a progressive foreign policy approach and a radical socio-economic perspective that is opposed to the US-sponsored neo-liberal regimes in Central and South America, as well as in the Caribbean. Moreover Cuba has great military capabilities and can rely on international support and solidarity. Also its military includes a militia of a million members and is capable of prolonged resistance. And off course, there’s significant popular support for the country’s ‘socialized’ economy, its great public education, excellent health care and radical foreign policy. (See Prof. James Petras in “America’s Enemies, Who’s On the List?”)

In September 2018 the US authorized the utilization of cyber operations and weapons against Cuba.

“We reject these aggressive practices and cyber attacks,” Rodriguez said.

Over 5,000 Jobs Lost In Lagos After Anti-Xenophobic Protest – Governor Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed that the anti-xenophobic protest which went wrong, led to loss of over 5,000 jobs in the state.

Sanwo-Olu condemned looting of goods in the shopping malls and also disclosed the number of jobs lost during an inspection of some facilities damaged during the protest which was hijacked by hoodlums. He said victims of the attack were indigenous stores and not even South African-owned businesses.

He said: ‘’We have seen the level of destruction at both Novare Plaza and Surulere plaza.

“The first is to condemn the act that had led to this destruction in strong terms. These are just enormous destruction of property. This is extensive destruction of people’s wealth.

“Unfortunately, during my inspection of both plazas, I discovered that those affected were all indigenous stores and companies.

“Even the names that are synonymous with South Africa, I could see that there were over 150 staffs that could not get to perform their duties because of the act.

‘’From the evidence shown, we realized that people also jumped in through some nearby properties within the community. All these are unimaginable.

‘’But really the lesson learnt from all these were that we all go back and check what are the social implications of what has happened and how can we learn from it.’’

‘’When people come into a store overnight to loot the goods, it is an act that must be condemned. With the act now, over 5000 people are out of job. These are places that Nigerians were the major ones affected.’’
